Sugarberry or Southern Hackberry

Identification: 

-Simple leaf with smooth or small teeth on margin, asymmetrical in shape
-Smooth gray bark with corky wart-like ridges
-Small fruit turning orange, red to dark purple in fall.

Note:   Widely distributed in flood plains of Louisiana, the Southern Hackberry is a durable species.  The species is highly adaptable to a wide range of soil types including calcareous soils.  For this reason it may be used in situation where it is difficult to cultivate other species.
